On page #65 Scott McCould recommends making life histories for your characters, giving their actions and thoughts reason, giving an initial definition so that your characters create themselves. On page #11 of Episode 0 in Sandman Gaiman does just that, sharing his initial definition of each major character so as not to be burdened by adding reason to their later actions. He defines them so their choices make sense further down the story.
