Jake Parker, Missile Mouse, and you. (+RW)

Jake Parker will be taking the reigns for this Monday's class. There are just too many cool things Jake has been involved in to say in this little post, so instead of saying it all here, go find out for yourselvesHERE; (that's an order).

Mandatory: Before this monday's class, you are required to read all of Jake's sample comicbook work online, you can find it >HERE<, and then click on "COMICS".

I have only recently go into Jake's work. I have the first volume of Missile Mouse on order, and will make it available to you in time. Jake's work can also be found in the "FLIGHT" story collections.

Just as we did with Jake Wyatt's day of instruction, you are required to document things of note in a post (labeled "Jake Parker" and "Wow") by the following Wednesday night.

In other announcements, we have Ryan Woodward to teach you a thing or three on Monday June 6th. You'll need to read his Darkhorse-published 4-issue "Invincible Ed". I'll bring a copy on Monday for you all to take turns reading before June 6th.

If you haven't taken the time to formally go through his website - you'll need to do that before June 6th. Check it out >Here<.

Outside Critic + Online Gems

Class,

I've invited some of your professors, as well as a few past and potential guest instructors to the blog. They are welcome to comment if they feel like it.

On another note, check out these comics, you can view it online: Death Day; be patient, it takes a while to upload.

Here is another one: Green Monk - just a small taste of the entire story, but a really fine execution.

Both of these would be filed under Sci-fi and Fantasy.

Concerning Assignment 3 "Edit:"

This is very important:
As you post your responses I will be commenting on them, and in some cases, asking for immediate adjustments to your response.
While I do ask that you edit your original posts, please DO NOT ERASE ANY PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL POST.
Rather, what you should do is add completely new paragraphs to it, and tag new content with headers that say "Edit:"

Thanks

Elective Assignments (extra stuff)

Elective assignments (see label). I'm really pleased with our upcoming curriculum, and look forward to seeing your responses and creative output. I also feel that this class will push you enough without pushing you too much.
-But some of you want to be pushed even more (I know I do). That is what elective assignments are for.
•What these assignments will NOT do is play into your final grade.
•What these assignments will do is provide an outlet for some of us to get together beyond the class and really push towards finishing a comic.

While there are no promises in the outcome, I can say that the formula of (1) collaboration, (2) deadline, and (3) art that results in a physical item, can equal very high quality work.

I used to think that making a comic was mostly about making a good story - but i was wrong. A smooth read in comics is a hard thing to accomplish. Even if you don't like a story, if it was easy to understand then I will applaud the artist/writer.

There is no way to cover everything we need to cover in a single term/semester. But the Elective Assignments will be there if you are looking for something more to do along other students, or want to propose something yourself.

Announcements (x3)

1. Jake Wyatt will be taking the reigns to teach us his comic book making process for the Image comic book he is artist for "Hawaiian Dick". He will also be talking about how he "makes stuff up" in terms of creating stories. Wednesday 4 May.

2. Also this Wednesday, Catherine Wyatt (the most well-read female who I've ever met) will take some time to talk about her experiences finding good reads in such a male-dominated genre as comics.

3. Free Comic Book Day is next Saturday, 7 May. This is not mandatory, but for those available to go, we'll plan a trip out to Night Flight Comics in Murray, and meet some local comic book stars.

Free Comic Book Day 2011 @ Night Flight Comics

Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores.

Both locations of Night-Flight Comics are proud to participate in Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7th, 2011. See Night Flight link to see what artists are attending and for more info.
